Kamal Sarabandi Receives Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award

Kamal Sarabandi, Rufus S. Teesdale Professor of Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2010 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award from the U-M Rackham Graduate School. He is recognized as an internationally-renowned scholar in the area of microwave remote sensing, an inspirational mentor of graduate students, and a dedicated professional who is well-known for his contributions to numerous professional societies and governmental advisory boards.

Prof. Sarabandi’s research encompasses a wide range of topics in the area of applied electromagnetics, specifically: microwave and millimeter-wave radar remote sensing; antenna miniaturization and reconfigurable antennas for wireless applications; wireless channel characterization for performance assessment of wireless systems; and millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave subsystems and components with applications to radar imaging (collision avoidance, autonomous vehicle control, security, etc.).

His work reaches into such diverse areas as global warming, security at airports, and trouble-free wireless communication. His extensive work with antennas has led to important work in antenna miniaturization, as well as new work in metamaterials for antennas.

Prof. Sarabandi manages a large, prolific, and highly successful student research group. His students to date have received 21 paper awards at major conferences, and they are regular recipients of prestigious fellowships.  He has already graduated more than 30 PhD students. In the area of curriculum development, he has developed a microwave measurements laboratory, and an advanced course in the area of microwave and millimeter-wave remote sensing.

A member of the NASA Advisory Council, Prof. Sarabandi received a NASA Certificate of Appreciation for Significant Contribution for his service on the Workshop on Science Associated with the Lunar Exploration Architecture. In addition to numerous awards for research and teaching excellence by the University of Michigan, he has received the Humboldt Research Award and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, sponsored by the U-M Rackham Graduate School, honor senior faculty who have consistently demonstrated outstanding achievements in the areas of scholarly research and/or creative endeavors, teaching and mentoring of students and junior faculty, service and a variety of other activities which have brought distinction to themselves and to the University of Michigan.

Prof. Sarabandi will receive his award at a special ceremony October 7, 2010.
